Traditional japanese housing design

Fusuma are sliding partitions which are made of thick Japanese paper stretched over a wooden frame. Two or more rooms can be connected by removing fusuma.

Shoji is a sliding screen with rectangular wooden frame and wooden latticework onto which Japanese paper is pasted. It introduces soft light into a room through paper and creates calm atmosphere inside the room.

Tatami are mats used to cover the floor in a Japanese style room. They are thick and hard mats made of rice straw with a cover of woven rushes. The shape and size of a tatami are standardized, then the size of a room can be expressed by the number of tatamis such as a room with 8 tatamis, for example.
